What is Advanced Manufacturing?

Advanced Manufacturing leverages cutting-edge technologies and methods to refine and elevate conventional manufacturing practices, leading to advanced efficiency, productivity, & quality. At Western Maryland Works, we develop courses and training programs for this, aimed at strengthening the workforce in the surrounding tri-state area.

Machining

Our machining lab places a strong emphasis on safety. It is crucial to wear protective eyewear, long pants or jeans that are free of holes and frays, and durable closed-toe shoes to ensure a safe working environment.

Machinist Program MTT120-MTT123

Machining (MTT120-MTT123)

This course provides training in both Manual machining and Computer Numerical Control  (CNC) machine tool technology through extensive hands-on and computerbased instruction. Students will gain practical experience operating a variety of machine tools while developing the foundational skills needed in modern machining environments. The class is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment as Manual and/or CNC machinists, with  opportunities for advancement in the field. Instruction is primarily hands-on, with an emphasis on real-world applications, precision, and safety practices used in industry settings. This program is structured around industry-recognized competencies and credentials, focusing on the skills required for successful employment in machining careers. Mill Bootcamp MTT110

Mill Bootcamp (MTT110)

This 16-hour course prepares students for entry-level work in an industrial machining environment. Instruction is primarily hands-on and focuses on foundational milling  operations and machine setup procedures. Topics include tramming the machine head and table and standard milling techniques (surface, side, plunge, conventional, and climb). Students also
learn drilling, reaming, and tapping operations, backlash elimination, and establishing machine zero on the X, Y, and Z axes. Emphasis is placed on safe machine operation, precision, accuracy, and developing the core skills required for success in a machining or manufacturing setting.

Lathe Bootcamp MTT111

Lathe Bootcamp (MTT111)

This 16-hour course is designed to prepare students for entry-level work in an industrial machining environment. Instruction is primarily hands-on and focuses on fundamental lathe
operations and safe machine practices. Topics include the use of four-jaw chucks, turning between centers, facing, general turning operations, knurling, threading (both left- and right-hand threads), and parting operations. Students will gain experience in setup, tool selection, and precision machining techniques used in industry settings. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, safety, and the development of core lathe skills needed for machining careers.

CAD for Machining MTT112

CAD for Machining (MTT112)

This course introduces Computer-Aided Design (CAD) principles and application in machining and manufacturing environments. Instruction is primarily hands-on and focuses on developing the skills needed to create accurate, machinist-ready drawings and 3D models. Students will learn to interpret technical prints and translate them into digital models used for machining operations. Topics include sketching, dimensioning, tolerances, part modeling, and preparing designs for manufacturing workflows. Emphasis is placed on design intent, precision, and real-world machining applications.

Welding

In our welding lab, safety is our priority! It is essential to wear leather welding gloves, protective eyewear, a welding helmet, and welding jackets at all times during shop usage. Additionally, appropriate attire is required for each class session to ensure your safety. This includes long pants or jeans without holes or frays, a long-sleeve shirt, and sturdy work boots—tennis shoes are not permitted.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (VTE711)

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (VTE711)

This 80-hour course provides participants with a thorough understanding of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), including welding safety, AC and DC power sources, electrode classifications/selection, metal preparation, and weldments. Participants will develop the skills needed to produce quality welds in flat, horizontal, vertical-up, and overhead positions (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G) on 3/8-inch mild steel. Instruction includes single and multiple pass welding techniques using mild steel, low-hydrogen, and iron-powder electrodes. Upon successful completion, participants will be prepared for production welding, millwright work, and general maintenance welding applications. To prepare for class, participants need: leather welding gloves, protective eyewear, welding helmet, and welding jacket. A Welding Starter Package is available for purchase and is recommended for those who do not already have the required safety equipment. Participants who already own equivalent gear are not required to purchase the package.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding Certification (VTE714)

This 40-hour course is designed for experienced and trained welders preparing for certification testing in the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. Participants refine skills required for successful certification testing welding 3/8-inch steel plate in 3G & 4G positions.

Training focuses on the vertical-up and overhead welding positions, with ample practice on test plates to prepare for the final certification exam. All certification testing is conducted in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) specifications and procedures.

MIG/TIG Welding (VTE748)

This 40-hour intermediate-level course is designed for welders with basic welding experience. Participants may enroll in this course concurrently with the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) course if they wish to develop skills in multiple welding processes. Instruction covers welding safety, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-MIG), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW-TIG). Topics include metal transfer modes such as short-circuiting, globular, spray arc, and power mode, as well as the effects of various shielding gases on MIG and TIG welding processes. Hands-on training focuses on welding mild steel using edge, corner, lap, and fillet welds in multiple positions. Welding applications are limited to thin, flat materials and do not include thick plate, pipe, or irregularly shaped materials. To prepare for class, participants need: leather welding gloves, protective eyewear, a welding helmet, and a welding jacket. A Welding Starter Package is available for purchase and is recommended for those who do not already have the required safety equipment. Participants who already own equivalent gear are not required to purchase the package.

MIG/TIG Welding Certification (VTE854)

This 40-hour course is designed for experienced and trained welders preparing for certification testing in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-MIG) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW-TIG) processes. Participants develop and refine skills needed to successfully complete certification testing on 3/8-inch carbon steel plate in the vertical and overhead (3G & 4G) welding positions. Hands-on training includes extensive practice on test plates to prepare for the final certification exam. All certification testing is conducted by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) standards and procedures.

OSHA & Workplace Safety
 

OSHA 10 - General Industry

Essential safety and health training for workers, especially those new to the workforce. Learn OSHA fundamentals, worker rights, employer responsibilities, complaint procedures, hazard recognition, PPE, hazard communication, SDS, slips, trips, falls, electrical hazards, ergonomics, and safe use of hand and power tools. 

OSHA 10 - Construction

Foundational safety training for individuals entering the construction industry. Covers OSHA rights and responsibilities, filing complaints, fall protection, ladder and scaffold safety, electrical hazards, PPE, hazard communication, SDS, and safe operation of hand and power tools. 

OSHA 30 - Construction

Comprehensive 30-hour program designed for supervisors, safety representatives, and workers with safety responsibilities. Ideal for those involved in construction, demolition, renovation, and building development who are preparing for leadership and safety-focused roles. 

Forklift Certification VTE400

Forklift Certification (VTE400)

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively operate a powered industrial forklift. Training complies with OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Standard, 29 CFR 1920.178. Participants will engage in classroom instruction, hands-on practical training, and a final performance evaluation. Topics include: pre-operation inspections, load handling techniques, maneuvering and operational skills, applicable regulations, and safe operating practices. Course costs cover certification testing and requisite safety equipment (helmet and vest). Participants who successfully complete the course receive a Certificate of Training and a Wallet Certification Card.
